አስተያየት

1) በኔ ግምት ብዙ ጽሁፍ የማናየው ወይም ብዙ ሰው ስለዚህ ድህረ ገጽ አልሰማም ...ወይም ደግሞ ቢሰማም ጥቅሙን አልተረዳም። የገጹን መኖር ለማስረዳት....በውይይቶቻችን ጊዜ ይህን ድረ ገጽ እንደ ክርክር መርቻ ወይም ደግሞ ማጣቀሻ ማቅረቡ ለድሩ እድገት አስተዋጾ ያረጋል። ኢትዮጵያውያን በሚሳተፉበትም የኢንተርኔት ድሮች ሁሉ ዌብሳይቱን ማስተዋወቅ ለዚህ ቤት እድገት አስተዋጾ ያደርጋል።

ፕሮፌሰሮች፣ ዶክተሮች፣ ኢንጂነሮች ...ክቀን 5 ደቂቃቼውን ሰውተው አንዲት ጽሁፍ በቀን ቢያበረክቱ፣ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ለሚሄዱ ተማሪወች ጠቀሜታ ሊኖረው ስለሚችል የድሩም እድገት በዚያው ልክ ይሆናል።

የኢትዮጵያ ዩኒቨርሲቲወችን በኢንተርኔት እና ኢሜይል ስለዚህ ጉዳይ ልገናኛቸው ፈልጌ አልቻልኩም። አክሰስ ያላቸው ቢገናኙዋቸው ጥሩ ነው።

2) የድሩ የመጀመሪያ ገጽ ወጥ የሆነ ዲሳይን ቢኖረው ጥሩ ነው። የተተራመሰ ገጽታው ፕሮፌሽናል አያስመስለውም። ይህን ያልኩት ግን ያዘጋጆቹን ለዚህ ቤት መሳካት የሚያደርጉትን ጥረት በማድነቅ ነው።

በውነት ይህ ጽሑፍ ትንሽ ነው. እንዴት ያምሃርኛ ተማሪዎች ይህም ጽሁፍ ማነበብ ይችልላሉ?

፫) የፅሁፉ ትንሽነት ብቻ ሳይሆን፤ ያለውን ለማንበብ እራሱ፣ ፈልጎ ማግኘት ላይ ብዙ ጊዜ የሚያጋጥምና መስተካከል የሚገባው እንቅፋት አለ። የተሰጡት አስተያየቶች እንዳሉ ሆነው፡ የውክፒድያ ፕላትፎርምን እርዳታ ከሚሹት ችግሮች አንዱን በምሳሌ ላሳይ። የእድሜ ልክ የአማርኛ ተማሪ ስለሆንኩ በእሳቱ 'ሰ' ምሁራን የሚፅፉትን "ሰማይ" አንዳንድ ጊዜ የWikipedia search ተመሳሳይነቱን አገናዝቦ እንደማያገኘው "ሠማይ" አድርጌ ከፃፍኩ፡ ሰማዩን ያለአግባብ ሳላገኘው እቀራለሁ። በሃመሩ 'ሀ' የተፃፈም "ሕዝብ"፡ ውክፒዲያ በ ሕዝቡ 'ሐ' በትክክል እስካልተፃፈ ድረስ አይገባውምና፡ እንዲገባው እንዲደረግልን ልንፅፍ ይገባል። በቀደም "ዕብራይስጥ"ን "እብራይስጥ" ብዬ ጠርቼ መልስ አለማግኘቴ፣ ወዘተ፤ በኔ አስተያየት ቅር የሚያሰኝ ነው።

አቤቱታ

እስከ ጥቅምት 30 ቀን በአማርኛ ዊኪፔዲያ በ 5 ዓመታት ውስጥ 3416 አርዕስታትን ብቻ ማካተቱ በእውነት ያሳፍራል። እኛ አማርኛ ጸሐፊና ተናጋሪ ኢትዮጵያውያን ዕውቀቱ አንሶን ነው? ወይስ ዕውቀታችንን ለወገናችን የማካፈል ፍላጎት ስለሌለን ነው፣ ይሄ እፍረት ሊከሰት የቻለው? ኧረ እባካችሁ ወገኖች! እንሳተፍ። በኅዳር ወር ቁጥሩን ቢያንስ 4000 ለማድረስ እንሞክር! ከሌላ ቋንቋዎችም መተርጎም ከቀለለን በዚህም መንገድ ዊኪፔድያችንን እናስፋፋዋለን በጅምር ብቻ የተረሡትንም እናስፋፋቸው።

ወገኖቼ፦ የ'አማርኛ'ችን ዊኪፔዲያ በዛሬ ኅዳር 30 ቀን 3ሺህ አምሥት መቶ አሥራ አንድ ገጾችን አካቷል። በአንድ ወር ውስጥ ዘጠና አምሥት አዲስ ገጾች በመጻፋቸው ሁላችንም ልንኮራበት ይገባናል። ሆኖም የአማርኛችን 'ዊኪፔዲያ' በጽሁፍ ገጾች ብዛት አሁንም የሰማኒያ ሚሊዮንን ሕዝብ እና የታሪካዊ አገርን ትክክለኛ ገጽ የሚያስተባርቅ ይዞታ አይደለም። አንባቢያን፤ ተጠቃሚ እናንተ ወገኖችን አሁንም ለአንባቢ ወገኖችና ለራሳችንም ጥቅም እባካችሁ ትምሕርታችሁን/እውቀታችሁን በዚህ የጋራ ንብረታችን አማካይነት አካፍሉን፤ አስተምሩን እላለሁ።

አውሮፓውያን እዚህ ድረስ ሥልጣኔ የደረሱበት ዋና ስልት የግልን ኃሣብና ዕውቀት በጽሑፍ በመካፈል ነውና፤ እኛስ ከማን እናንሳለን??????እንበርታበት! በታሕሣሥ መጨረሻ ላይ 95 ገጾች ብቻ አይበቁንም!!!!! ከሌላ ቋንቋዎችም በመተርጎም ዊኪፔድያችንን ማስፋፋት የቀለለ መንገድ ነው። በጅምር ብቻ የተረሡትንም እናስፋፋቸው።

ውክፔዲያችንን እናሳድግ

አቤቱታየዬን ከጻፍኩ ጀምሮ እስከዛሬ ኅዳር 9 ቀን ይሄው የውኪፔድያችን አርዕስቶች ቁጥር በዘጠኝ ቀናት በ70 አድገው 3486 ደርሰናል። በዚህ ሂደት እስከወሩ መጨረሻ ድረስ ቁጥሩን 3650 እናደርሰዋለን ማለት ነው። እባካችሁ ለራሳችን እና ለአማርኛ ተናጋሪ/አንባቢ ወገኖች ጥቅም የአርዕስቶቹን ቁጥር መገንባታችንን እናትኩርበት። ከተባበርንበት በትርጉምም ሆነ በአዲስ አስተዋጾዖ በጥቂት ጊዜ ውስጥ 4000 ላይ መድረስ እንደማያቅተን አልጠራጠርም። እንበርታ! አርመንኛ እንኳን 5358 አርዕስቶችን ይዟል!!!!

I have been away for some time from wikipedia due to other engagements I am planning to spend some time contributing. My previous contributions include preparing the main page and the the Amharic wikipedia logo...etc.

I have few things to say about the present organization of the pages.

• The main page and others need a standard template and needs a lot of work. The amharic page is not quite apealing yet. I have created a main page for amharic wiktionary. We can use templates devloped by other languges and I used the Norwagian side to help me prepare the above. By the way we can develop glossary and standard terms more conviniently on wiktionary.
• I found quite a few pages including the main page locked so that it can not be edited. This is not very helpfull policy. Especially for languges that do not have that many contributers. Even thogh there is always the danger of vandalsm on wiki pages the sysops can revert a vandalized page with a click of a mouse instead of closing and discouraging many who would drop-in and drop a key information that would be critical for the sucssess of the project. I would like to sujest the present sysops to open all pages for editing.
• When I was translating the main page I translated "encyclopedia" as "መጽሐፈ-ዕውቀት". On hindsight this is not the right translation. The right translation should have been "መዝገበ-ዕውቀት". This would go nicely with "መዝገበ-ቃላት". I would like an input on this and if it makes sense then we should make the change as soon as posible before the bad translation takes root.
• The system message page is locked for editing. I do not know if the file is locked by default or sysops locked it. But we need to translate that page as soon as possible. By the way Is there any on who knows if the page has a po file? It would be much easier to run it through a translation memory and edit than writing each translation again. There is a lot of work that has been done for Amharic already. No need to re-envent the wheel.

The job that has been done is wonderfull and I hope we make this project a succesfull one for our people.

Welcome! or should I say Welcome back! I have been meaning to invigorate the Wiktionary for some time and was just on th verge of doing so, when you just barely beat me to it! I will register over there and help out with the excellent start you have made...

Since the Main Page over there (at am.Wiktionary) is open for editing, it's only fair that I unlock the Main Page here as well, so you can work on it... The other መጋቢ, Elfalem, had locked it in September, but I think we can probably deal with any vandalism as you said, as long as it doesn't get too bad... I don't know of any other pages that have been locked; looking at Special:Log/protect you can see that the feature hasn't been used much. Yes, the Mediawiki namespace is already locked by default and IMO should stay that way since it controls the interface... Under the new system, each element of the interface has its own page in the Mediawiki namespace, rather than a single file... however if you have any concrete suggestions for translating or improving any of them, go ahead -- the "Mediawiki Talk" namespace is open, they can be linked to from the above "System messages" page, and I will be sure to see it. We have pretty well finished most of the messages that the average user is liable to encounter when using the site.

As for መዝገበ-ዕውቀት, that makes sense to me, so if you update the logo first, we can make all the appropriate changes elsewhere...

Then I will be working on the Logo. In mean time the posibilities for the wiktionary are unlimited. The wikipedia page for the letters eg. ላዌ can be a very good starting point for the index page. The multilingual dictionarie is some thing that Ethiopians that spread through out the world can collaborate and create. Week days I will be busy and less active but on weekends and alternate weeks I will be putting some hours in To wiki-pedia-tionary.

I have uploaded new Amhaic logos at 4 6.

The difference between the two is phonetic. For an amharic speaker the sound of ውክፐዲያ is more right than ዊኪፔድያ. ውክሽነሪ፣ ውክመዲያ ፣ etc.

While I appreciate the contributions, I believe that Hinstein's changes to the main page should be discussed before they are made. A Proposal

Guys, I propose the following. When new comers contribute an article, we put their article under a category called [[መደብ:ጀማሪ]]. Then, since they will inevitably make mistakes, we let them make mistakes but encourage them to correct it with proper guidance. If they have not made the proper correction we can easily delete their article, say, after a week. Since we have put the article in a category, we can always trace it back. This way, we can make participation at wikipedia much easier.

I don't know of any other wikipedia that takes such steps, so it does sound a little extreme, and we don't really want to do anything that might discourage newcomers, which I think putting their articles in a separate category might do. Also, we wouldn't need that to track them, because the software does this for us pretty well... We can get all recent edits by newly created accounts; all recent edits by anonymous users; and all new articles showing the ones haven't been checked yet in yellow. Since you are an admin, the unchecked articles on that last link should show up in yellow - and you can even mark it as checked (or 'patrolled') by clicking the new article and looking for a little button in the lower right that says [ይህን ገጽ የተመለከተ ሆኖ ለማሳለፍ]...

Between those three automated tools, it doesn't look like new users are doing any activity that the more experienced editors can't handle already! Having to add a category 'beginners' for all beginners seems like extra work, besides making the beginner perhaps feel uncomfortable, but if you ever do see an article that needs a lot of work, there is already a template {{wikify}} you can put on it, that automatically adds the category መደብ:ልምድ የመከተል ጥያቄዎች...! Thanks for the tools, they are useful. I did not know the last one, I will use it. Here is the problem I am trying to solve. I have seen new comers writing the title of their new article and writing few sentences or no sentence at all in the body but post it anyway. I understand their frustration because although with practice we get used to it, it is a very difficult process from downloading the appropriate font to typing Amharic on an English/Latin keyboard; much less typing a complete article. When a process is too difficult, most of us like to take a break and come back some other time and get on with it. But if the articles are deleted, then the new comers will have no chance to improve upon their work. As a result the participation goes down. In short, I think we should give new comers a chance to improve upon their own work. I understand this can lead to very dirty wikipedia full of trash but if we have a way of tracing all the new articles at any given time, then we can always clean it at specified intervals. For example let us say we created 12 categories for each month and we collect all inappropriate posts of new comers by month. So if we collect all the inappropriate articles of February መደብ፡ ፌብሩዋሪ ጀማሪ, we can review them in march and if none of them have improved in quality we can delete them. We can cycle through the same category at any given year so we dont have to reinvent anything. This way we give a chance for new comers to make mistakes and learn from their errors for a month.

Hmmm... The closest category we have at the moment to such a category, is መደብ:ልምድ የመከተል ጥያቄዎች... it has collected 8 pages that are basically what I think you are describing, 'inappropriate posts'. Not really enough to break them down by month, but maybe we could, if traffic were to get much thicker at some point. Don't you think we could work with that already existing category (it comes with adding መለጠፊያ:wikify), and continue add any other articles that need help to it with this template? First, thank you Hgetnet for all the effort you put into designing the main page. I just would like to suggest a couple of things. One, it might be better to use a toned down color instead of red, which I think doesn't go with the rest of the page. Two, in the beginners area, I think we should just have the "መልመጃ ፩" and "ተጨማሪ" tabs because the other two (አርትዖ and ፊደል) greatly disrupt the layout of the page and there is already a significant amount of text on the page. Lastly, I think the idea of a Ge'ez wiki is great but I don't think it should be a subset of the Amharic wikipedia. 1- You are right. I disliked the busy look, that is why I experimented with various designs. I have one design in my user page using a toned down green but it looks cold. This is the same issue I had with the purple design. The red is too lively and busy. I am thinking of blue. I will do that when I get time but if you could go to my user page and look at the green design and comment on it.

2- I agree. Too much text is distracting. I will see by how much I can reduce it.

3- On Geez Wiki:3 things

many Ethiopian documents that exist before the 19th cent. are in Geez. It is useful to know the language

there will not be an independent Wikipedia for Geez because it does not qualify as its number of speakers are well below the cut off point. Wikipedia is already threatening to shut down the Afar wiki, so chances for Geez are grim.

other Wikipedias have a similar wiki in which the classical and modern languages coexist. Creating a Geez wiki has precdent.

I like the changes you've made to the main page layout and completely agree with color choices. The only thing that I suggest is that I don't think we should have the መልመጃ tabs because the contents in "አርትዖ" and "ፊደል" tabs are full pages by themselves. Therefore clicking on those tabs seriously breaks the layout of the page. I recommend just linking to those pages. Regarding Ge'ez, do what you feel is right. But if the situation is that we have a good number of Ge'ez documents, then we can think about a Ge'ez wikisource which in my opinion is a lot more easier to maintain than a wikipedia. The only mention of the name I saw, is near the bottom where it lists contact info, it uses ስያትል ትምህርት ቤት ሂድ ስታርት meaning "Seattle Schools Head Start" (the word 'public' is omitted); similarly in Tigrinya it says in the same place ስያትል ቤት ትምህርቲ ሂድ ስታርት meaning the same. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:12, 27 ማርች 2011 (UTC)

Better Font

Hi guys, I think the default font (which is Ethiopic Jiret) is very bland. Please take a look at this website to see Alternative Fonts. I wish we could change the default font to either Wookianos or Hiwa. Personally I use the Wookianos font and it is much easier to work with. Bold Amharic

Hi, Read your comment that Amharic font used in am.wiki -that the AbyssinicaSIL is bold font. I cannot read Amharic, but the font used is regular font variant released by SIL. Before deploying this in amwiki, we deployed it in translatewiki.net and had asked for feedback and am wiki community told us that it is ok to deploy. Could you please have a discussion with am wiki community , probably in am.wiki village pump? The font is great. Infact it is much better than the older font. However, the default setting of the new font appears to be bold. If there was a thinner version of this font, it would great. I would like to see what other writers have to say about it but personally I find the font very distracting. Imagine reading whole English essay in bold font. Overall, I have two problems with the current front. First, although the font looks OK for large-size texts such as the article title, I find it difficult for reading small-size texts such as an actual article. I think that is what Hgetnet is referring to when he says it's "bold." In addition, I don't like how English and numbers are displayed. The numbers in particular look small compared to the text that is surrounding font. I think it would be a good idea to add the old font on the webFonts extension (if there aren't copyright issues) so that users can choose the font they like. Elfalem (talk) 19:09, 7 ኤይፕርል 2012 (UTC)

Movement Charter Drafting Committee - Community Elections to take place October 11 - 24

This is a short message with an update from the Movement Charter process. The call for candidates for the Drafting Committee closed September 14, and we got a diverse range of candidates. The committee will consist of 15 members, and those will be (s)elected via three different ways.

The 15 member committee will be selected with a 3-step process:

• Election process for project communities to elect 7 members of the committee.
• Selection process for affiliates to select 6 members of the committee.
• Wikimedia Foundation process to appoint 2 members of the committee.

The community elections will take place between October 11 and October 24. The other process will take place in parallel, so that all processes will be concluded by November 1.

We are very happy about the wide range of diverse Wikimedians that are running for the election and selection processes for the drafting committee of the Movement Charter! As the number of candidates is quite large and thus informing yourself about them might be a bit more complicated, we want to try something different this time: We want to organize a so-called “Voting Advice Application (or “Election Compass) with statements related to the Movement Charter. The Call for Feedback about the Board of Trustees elections is now open

The Call for Feedback: Board of Trustees elections is now open and will close on 7 February 2022.

With this Call for Feedback, the Movement Strategy and Governance team is taking a different approach. This approach incorporates community feedback from 2021. Instead of leading with proposals, the Call is framed around key questions from the Board of Trustees. The key questions came from the feedback about the 2021 Board of Trustees election. The intention is to inspire collective conversation and collaborative proposal development about these key questions.

There are two confirmed questions that will be asked during this Call for Feedback:

1. What is the best way to ensure more diverse representation among elected candidates? The Board of Trustees noted the importance of selecting candidates who represent the full diversity of the Wikimedia movement. The current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Europe.
2. What are the expectations for the candidates during the election? Board candidates have traditionally completed applications and answered community questions. How can an election provide appropriate insight into candidates while also appreciating candidates’ status as volunteers?

There is one additional question that may be presented during the Call about selection processes. This question is still under discussion, but the Board wanted to give insight into the confirmed questions as soon as possible. Hopefully if an additional question is going to be asked, it will be ready during the first week of the Call for Feedback.

Studying challenges of Wiki Content Creators in Low Resource languages.

My name is Hellina and i am a second year PhD student at UC Berkeley. I am conducting research regarding the challenges faced by content creators in low-resourced languages; ie languages that do not have a lot of data available online. As part of the research, I am conducting interviews with content creators where I observe either virtually or in person, the creation and editing of a Wiki article in a low resource language. ETHIOPIAN NEWYEAR/Enkutatash

Enkutatash (Ge'ez: እንቁጣጣሽ) is a public holiday in coincidence of New Year in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It occurs on Meskerem 1 on the Ethiopian calendar, which is 11 September (or, during a leap year, 12 September) according to the Gregorian calendar.

According to Ethiopian tradition, on 11 September Queen of Sheba (Makeda in Ethiopian) returned to Ethiopia from her visit to King Solomon in Jerusalem. Her followers celebrated her return by giving her jewels. Hence ‘‘Enkutatash’’ means the ‘‘gift of jewels’’.

This holiday is based on the Ethiopian calendar. It is the Ethiopian New Year.

Large celebrations are held around the country, notably at the Raguel Church on Mount Entoto.

According to InCultureParent, "after attending church in the morning, families gather to share a traditional meal of injera (flat bread) and wat (sauce). Later in the day, young girls donning new clothes, gather daisies and present friends with a bouquet, singing New Year's songs." According to the Ethiopian Tourism Commission, "Enkutatash is not exclusively a religious holiday. Modern Enkutatash is also the season for exchanging formal new year greetings and cards among the urban sophisticated – in lieu of the traditional bouquet of flowers."

The Ethiopian counting of years begins in the year 8 of the common era. This is because the common era follows the calculations of Dionysius, a 6th-century monk, while the non-Chalcedonian countries continued to use the calculations of Annius, a 5th-century monk, which had placed the Annunciation of Christ exactly 8 years later.
